PROTOTYPE INFORMATION:

The SD45 is a reliable, heavy-duty locomotive that has been utilized by many different North American railroads at one time or another since its 1965 introduction to the railroading scene. Noteworthy as the first diesel locomotive with an engine of more than 16 cylinders, EMD would eventually build 1260 of these 3600-horsepower road switcher units in less than six years!

More than twenty-five railroads bought these units new, and several more purchased them second-hand. Some of these users applied more than one paint scheme to the sides of the SD45 as well. (That’s a lot of modeling possibilities for our Undecorated model!!) A distinguishing mark of the SD45 is the flared radiator along the top edge of the long hood’s midsection.

MODEL FEATURES:

This production of our HO-Scale SD45 combines three all-new roadnames with two popular roads from the first release for railroads in the East, Midwest and West.

While maintaining the traditional KATO five-pole motor with dual brass flywheels, wired all-wheel electrical pick-up and precision craftsmanship and detail, these models are also updated with the following features:

- High Mount Brake Cylinder Trucks
- White LED Headlight
- Knuckle couplers
- Printed numberboards
- MU hoses
- Cab sun shades
- Windshield wipers
- Dynamic brake "T-Vent"

Some detail pieces require hobbyist installation. These models will be factory-equipped with a DCC socket.

PAINT SCHEME:

The Santa Fe Warbonnet continues to be the most recognized North American railroad paint scheme. ATSF 5592 was one of the first SD45s repainted from the Pinstripe scheme to the Warbonnet. It received the paint scheme prior to rebuilding and the addition of a cab roof air conditioner. Sister 5596 also received the Warbonnet scheme. Both units have been photographed without the nose headlight modification, making them good candidates for our bodyshell.
